The Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club has a long
and proud history of participation (and success) in Surf Life Saving
Competition, which we now know as Aquatic Sports in Victoria and Surf
Sports Nationally.
However, in recent years despite the good intentions
and efforts of a few, the number of members taking part in Aquatic Sports
has continued to be very low, compared to our size of membership. For many
years we have ‘lost’ talented members who have a desire to be
involved in Aquatic Sports to other Clubs, such as our neighbouring Club at
Ocean Grove.
In 2007 the Club produced a Strategic Plan for our
next 10 years. As a part of this we documented our Club Vision:
We will provide lifesaving services for the community of Point
Lonsdale and Queenscliff, enable our members to develop their skills,
knowledge and experience in lifesaving and sports and to improve the
profile and influence of the club through community and member involvement
and leadership in development programs and initiatives.
It clearly highlighted that we would offer Aquatic
Sports opportunities.
Specifically related to Aquatic Sports, a number of
short term objectives were identified in the Strategic Plan and these
included:
O
To advertise and
appoint a Head Coach and Team Manager who will be responsible for the day
to day running and success of the competition team.
O
To encourage new
members, current members and past members to compete for Point Lonsdale in
the R & R, Swimming, Board & Ski, Iron Person, Boat and Beach
areas.
O
To develop an IRB
competition team.
O
To attend a Queensland carnival
taking a team consisting of six males, six females, Team manager and Coach.
O
To train Level 1
coaches to guide the competition areas.
The Club’s Executive Committee has identified
that we had a shortfall in the Aquatic Sports area and that steps had to be
taken to meet the objectives in our Strategic Plan.
We are pleased to announce that we have
secured the services of a very well qualified, experienced and accredited
Head Coach from the Torquay SLSC. David
Strahan has been appointed to the position of Head Coach for Season
2009 / 2010.
David will specifically be
offering training in swim, board, ski and beach events
to members from
Under 13 to Open categories.
