Surf Rescue Base : Point Lonsdale - Back
(Surf) Beach
Background:
The Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club is one of only a handful
of Clubs in Australia that operates more than one facility. Unfortunately
due to a number of factors the Club is unable to operate only
one 'large' facility at the Surf Beach (which house all equipment
and facilities) and therefore this uniqueness places a number
of financial and other pressures on the Club.
The Club's Clubrooms is located on the corner of Ocean Road and
Buckley's Road Point Lonsdale, and is totally out of sight of
the beach, making it unsuitable for a place to operate Surf Rescue
patrols from. It houses meeting and training areas, an office,
a clothing shop, accommodation areas, bathroom facilities, gear
storage, a kitchen and lounge facilities.
The Surf Rescue Base, located at the town's Back (Surf) Beach
was constructed in 1982 and is where Volunteer Surf Lifesavers
and Professional Lifeguards house their rescue equipment and base
their Surf Rescue Patrols from. This facility had served the Club
members and the community well during this time, however it had
become apparent that the facility no longer fully met the needs
of the Club for a number of reasons.
There were no public toilet facilities located at this beach.
There was insufficient space to house rescue equipment.
There was insufficient space to house training equipment.
There was no area for members to conduct training out of the extremes
of weather.
During 2001 extensive renovations and extensions were made. The
Hon. Justin Madden MLA officially opened the newly
completed facility in January 2002.
